Monocle The Urbanist Podcast: How can Meanwhile use help New York City?

Monocle‘s The Urbanist podcast is a weekly look at what makes cities tick, from city hall to the suburbs and considered an authoritative guide to creating better cities. Listen to Jesse Klimitz and Rosalind Tsang, AIA, LEED AP BD C describe the concept of ‘meanwhile use’ and how it could help The Big Apple.

This year, our team in New York launched our ‘reGeneration’ study which proposes a process to improve urban health outcomes of existing communities using the concept of ‘meanwhile use’ as a catalyst. This means identifying short-term uses for temporarily empty buildings or vacant lots, as an opportunity to help keep an area vibrant, and with purpose.

Our research has led us to believe that temporary uses for development sites and existing, underutilized buildings can rapidly bring much-needed services and amenities to communities and provide opportunities for positive connections between real estate developers, landowners, investors, residents and local businesses to inform the legacy use of the site.
