The Project
The Enterprise Centre at the University of East Anglia provides rentable floor space for startups including offices, meeting rooms and hot desks, along with teaching and learning facilities for the university. Our team provided wellness and sustainability consulting, and post-occupancy evaluation to deliver a building focused on passive design and occupant health and comfort.
User experience is central to the design. Façades are designed to maximize natural light while also embracing Passivhaus principles and ventilation best practice. The building’s orientation, fenestration and shading strategy followed the natural daylight cycle and enhanced its effect on occupant wellbeing and productivity. The resulting space remains comfortable to users even in the peak of summer.
The team was dedicated to delivering an exemplar building in terms of embodied energy, maximizing use of local and natural materials, materials from renewable sources and materials with high carbon storage.
The Enterprise Centre included the use of innovative thatched cassettes as rainscreen cladding. A completely new way of using thatch, the process involved fabricating timber cassette modules that were filled with reed and straw in thatcher’s barns across Norfolk.
The building achieved BREEAM Outstanding, is Passivhaus certified and has won numerous awards. A three-year post occupancy and building performance evaluation programme was implemented to assist the occupiers to operate their building optimally and ensure the building performs as designed.
