The Project

Human Space implemented a comprehensive assessment of 22 municipal properties in the City of Thunder Bay against the provincial regulated and accessibility standards.

The municipal properties included sports/community/recreation centres, arenas/pools and offices.

The scope of the audit surveyed areas that are imperative to building use and that were publicly occupied. The review included access and circulation, parking, public spaces, recreation spaces, change rooms, washrooms, offices and amenity spaces. The audit team recorded the findings on-site and created a report that outlined accessibility recommendations to improve each building. Executive summaries and a cost analysis organized by priority of remediation to accessibility barriers was provided as well.

In addition, Human Space created a design standard for accessible transit stops that integrated feedback from public consultation and the City’s Accessibility Advisory Committee.

In 2019, the team will be returning to Thunder Bay to complete a second round of accessibility audits.

“It was a pleasure working with you folks. We are very happy with the results and the work that was completed. Thank you for all of your assistance.”
